The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Digital Device
It has been 30 anniversary since the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a major animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and the space ranger (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys
The preview reveals Bonnie — who received the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters seem to view it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser doesn't touch on is why Woody is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in Bonnie's room without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with him. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some elements are carrying over from the prior film. The final act Woody did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (Joan Cusack), entrusting her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip displays the insignia attached to her outfit.
Hopefully she is remains the driving force among the group.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
